O f th e many things that make “Shaun of the Dead” a cult classic, one that stands out is the protagonists’ movie-long dispute over whether dogs can look up. What seems like an inane and insignificant question (whose answer is a resounding “duh”) has been given an absurd amount of deliberation online. Some genuinely wonder, while most just see it as a good prank. After reading the revelations of random bloggers, Yahoo Answers and even Howitworks.com, one walks away surprisingly less certain than before — and the dog question is just the tip of the iceberg. In theory, we’d be able to turn to the internet for reliable answers. The previous generation sees it as some kind of oracle: Consult the almighty Google, and all shall be revealed. Unfortunately, it isn’t quite like that. Everyone has an opinion, and the modern marketplace of ideas is giving pretty much anybody a place to share, leaving readers with a mishmash of conflicting opinions and no idea whom to trust. T.S. Eliot once wrote that the critic has a duty “to discipline his personal prejudices and cranks ... and compose his differences with as many of his fellows as possible, in the common pursuit of true judgment. While he was writing mainly about literary criticism, the general sentiment points to a gaping and universal issue: the need for objectivity. If only it were as simple as Eliot makes it sound. It’s like the tragedy of the commons: People wave their opinions around — some of them better informed and reasoned than others — and the public forum becomes saturated with misinformation. For example, people trust their computers for medical advice far more than they should. According to the good digital doctors of MayoClinic.com, pretty much everything from fatigue to that pimple on your chin is a sign of cancer. Objectivity is under attack. Each side is shooting off its claims, and those of us looking for answers are getting caught in the crossfire. Slowly but surely, the internet is turning into an informational wasteland. It would help to reframe the idea of objectivity. Rather than thinking of it as something attainable, we should treat it as an ideal toward which to strive. It might always be just out of reach, but there are a few basic things we can all do to get asymptotically closer. We could all start by listening more than we talk. Giving each other respect and attention would have two benefits. First, it would assure our allies and opponents that they’ll be taken seriously, convincing everyone to turn the volume down and lessening the collective earache. Second, it will remind us to consider other perspectives — not every question has only one answer. We could also take a lesson from David Hume, who popularized what philosophers call the “is/ought discrepancy.” What happens to be the case and how it ought to be are two different things. Perhaps the most important part of objectivity is staying true to the facts, no matter your ideology. Be honest about what the evidence tells you, and store it separately from your normative commitments. That alone would be a great start. Who knows — taking the evidence to heart might even change your beliefs for the better. Finally, let’s not take the authority of others for granted. So much progress would be made if everyone was just a little warier of other people’s testimonies, including those of their loved ones. The fact that Mom and Dad raised you doesn’t mean that their word is gospel. When people seem to be speculating, hold them to it. When they cite controversial facts, inspect them for yourself. Anyone who played telephone as a youth knows how quickly the sworn testimony of others gets distorted as it makes its way down the grapevine. Objectivity isn’t easy to achieve, but we have to try anyway. We owe it to each other to speak the truth, especially with the online behemoth quite literally at our fingertips. Spire's revenues from continuing operations for the fourth-quarter ended December 31, 2013 were $3.6 million, a decrease of 5% from $3.8 million in the fourth-quarter of 2012. The decrease was primarily due to sales mix within the solar manufacturing business segment. Net loss for the quarter was $1.9 million, or $0.22 per diluted share, compared to net loss of $1.1 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, for the fourth-quarter of 2012. Spire recorded a net loss from continuing operations of $1.9 million in the fourth-quarter of 2013, compared to a net loss from continuing operations of $1.3 million in the fourth-quarter of 2012. Gross margin from continuing operations for fiscal year 2013 was $2.5 million, or 17% of revenue, compared to $5.3 million, or 24% of revenue for fiscal year 2012, primarily due to the decline in sales, lower indirect costs offset by the amount of overhead absorbed due to the reduction in sales volume. Net cash used in operating activities of continuing operations was $5.2 million for the year ended 2013, as compared to net cash used in operating activities of continuing operations of $6.1 million for the same period last year. At year-end 2013, Spire had unrestricted cash and cash equivalents of $4.0 million, as compared to $3.0 million at December 31, 2012. Rodger W. Family is important and the girls have always looked to Abby in the role of a harsh mother. How will this illness affect her relationship with the girls? Will it make her see that everyone is valuable because they are "family" or will she still strive for the perfect team? We know that Nia appears to be excused from the team -- hey, don't yell at me. Yell at Abby Lee. For Abby Lee, each performance has become a battle, so her rehearsal room has turned into the war room. As the team arrives, Holly asks about Mrs. Miller and learns she is not doing well. Mackenzie, though, has Abby directing a photo shoot. As the pyramid starts, Maddie, Mackenzie, Kendall, Chloe and Nia are together on the bottom, but not for goofing up -- because they did what they were supposed to do and kept dancing when the music messed up. Kalani is on the top due to her overall high score. Abby announces that she is holding auditions for a second team which will not necessarily replace the original girls but compete against them. Even with her mom sick, Abby wants more. Abby tells the girls about her mom and Melissa thanks Abby for letting her be a part of her family's life. Maddie and Chloe are both crying because Mrs. Miller has always been there. Abby gives both girls a hug and tells them that dance teachers must love to teach. Abby composes herself and announces that Kendall will have a solo to "Dream It." Nia will perform a solo to "Damsel in Distress." Chole and Kalani will have a duet to "For You Too." The group routine will include everyone and is called "Bollywood and Vine." Then the moms are dismissed. Abby tells us that "Bollywood and Vine" is difficult. Gia is in charge since Abby will not be there. Kira asks why Abby is doing a second team with the problems they are having with costumes. Melissa gets a call from Abby that Mrs. Miller is declining. Nia works on her solo and has wonderful facial expressions. Holly fears that Nia is discouraged because she hasn't placed in competition or had many solos. Kendall is also nervous, and Jill needs Kendall to beat Nia. Great team spirit, Jill. Abby holds auditions for Mackenzie's video. Chloe gets cut and Maddie is named an assistant. Wait! Mackenzie lets Maddie and Nia in the video. I always thought Mackenzie saw things clearer. After all, she's won with Nia before. Mackenzie will go by Mac Z when she sings. The group number has a costume problem. Abby will cut one member from the group and guess who it is: Nia. Nia is supposed to use her time for her solos. Holly tells us that costumes are a problem because Abby just doesn't order enough. Holly is upset and she leaves, telling everyone that she's moving on. At group rehearsal, we learn that Holly feels that cutting Nia makes Abby looks bad. Melissa arrives and gives an update on Mrs. Miller. While the moms feel sorry for Abby, they decide that the girls need to remember the positive things that Mrs. Miller has done. Christi and Kira are happy with their daughters' duet. The girls seem perfectly matched, but Christi sees Chloe as the fall guy if something goes wrong. Holly doesn't like that Abby has a board in the room of all possible new members. Abby doesn't go to the competition. Gia urges them to get the win. Holly gets the girls to share their good memories of Mrs. Miller and leads a time of prayer/meditation. Both Maddie and Chloe break down as they arrive at the competition. In Ohio, the girls fend for themselves. Holly tells Gia that she can bring home the win. Gia calls Abby and learns that Mrs. Miller isn't doing well. Melissa thinks things are more relaxed in the dressing room but the girls need Abby. Jill's not worried about Abby. All she wants is a top five for Kendall. Gia will send the performances to Abby. The duet is up first. Chloe and Kalani perform together well. Their number appears flawless as they work together well. Kendall looks beautiful and even does good facials this week. Chloe encourages Nia as she takes to the stage. Holly is worried but knows Nia has what it takes. This musical theater number is cute and Nia has the facials for it. As the group prepares to take the stage, Holly leads them in prayer. The girls are in character and do a good job. Nia is with Holly in the audience and looks sad. Gia thinks they all did well. That's a welcome change from the complaints. At awards, Nia gets third and Kendall gets second. Chloe and Kalani get first in duet/trios. Yeah, all the girls do good tonight. The group gets first. Gia is all smiles, which is different from what Abby would have been. In the dressing room, the girls tell Abby they won. Nia asks to be in the group next week. Christi sees the day as more about honoring Mrs. Miller. Next week, Abby discuss change, the video is shot and Nia gets on Abby's nerves. Dawn. LAST Friday, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) finally did what it should have done a decade ago when the first drones flew over North Waziristan. In a statement following the passage of a resolution introduced by Pakistan, Yemen, and Switzerland, it instructed all states to ensure that the use of armed drones complied with international law. Specifically, the language of the resolution instructed “all states to ensure that any measures employed to counter terrorism, including the use of remotely piloted aircraft or armed drones, comply with their obligations under international law ... in particular the principles of precaution, distinction and proportionality”. The text of the resolution reflected the compromises that must have been necessary in paving the way for a small state like Pakistan to finally get it passed. First among these was that it named no names. The US, the world’s chief drone aggressor waging drone wars in Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Somalia, was not named. Also absent was any enumeration of consequences. Instead, the resolution laid out the next steps, which were predictably in the realm of what the UN does best: it asked for Navi Pillay, the head of the UNHRC, to hold “expert discussions” on drone warfare. It is a tragedy that can only be wept for in the dark, lonely corners of a Pakistani (or Rwandan or Syrian or Iraqi) newspaper. Doing so is not to detract from the strategic acumen of Zamir Akram, Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, who finally managed to get Pakistan’s position recognised and supported by member nations in an environment where the qualms and queries of small nations do not normally draw ears, let alone votes. Accomplishing the passage of a resolution that even indirectly chastises the only boss of a unipolar world is a victory and must be recognised as such. It is the quality of the victory, and the difficulties in achieving it, that make up material for lament. In a world that is full of conflict and overreach, the one transnational organisation that was supposed to provide the basis for achieving international consensus, enabling a consideration of principles, and curbing overreach by brute force, seems grossly incapable of doing so. In the 10 years it has taken the UN to issue this exhortation, Pakistan has been ripped apart by the consequences of imperial overreach. Displacement and demographic upheaval, political unrest, and deepening rifts are now part of Pakistan’s post-drone landscape. A religious right stands ennobled, and overtly anti-state forces are dictating terms at peace negotiations. Pakistan’s particularities are hardly the basis for calling out the UN as an institution no longer able to accomplish its purpose. This week brought the announcement of an investigation into the Sri Lankan civil war, during which the country’s government has been accused of slaughtering nearly 40,000 people. Like the resolution on drones, the announcement was lauded by human rights groups and is indeed a step forward in holding parties responsible. However, while it may yield solace and closure and accountability, the investigation comes after the war and after people are dead. Weighed on the scales of “preventing” such cataclysms, the effort is completely ineffectual, as has been the case so often. Indeed, even in the past month, the UN did make an effort to thwart ongoing conflicts; to provide, as was hoped at its inception, the force that would stand up for the little guys. On the same day that marked the passage of the drone resolution, Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN special envoy for Syria, was unable to break the deadlock between the Assad regime and the Syrian opposition. In a statement he apologised to the Syrian people, saying: “I am very, very sorry and I apologise to the Syrian people that their hopes which were very, very high here, that something will happen here.” It was the sixth consecutive day of talks; while they went on, the violence in Syria continued to escalate. The UK-based Syrian Human Rights Observatory estimates the death toll to have topped 140,000. High hopes, it seems, are all that the UN offers populations caught in contemporary conflicts. The question remains whether this in itself is enough to support and sustain an institution that cannot force superpowers to stop meddling, at least not until after they have accomplished their interventionist goals. Whether it is Russia in Crimea, the US in Yemen and Pakistan, or anywhere else, the actions come late or not at all. In cases such as Syria, where various conglomerations have aligned on various sides, no action is possible at all. Given this track record, and the continuation of an organisationally flawed system of vetoes granted to a few, the UN seems ill-equipped to deal with the challenges of contemporary conflict. If all the world requires resolutions that decorously request superpowers to behave (knowing they will be ignored) and expert discussions in well-appointed conference rooms, then a different organisation — one that costs a lot less and works a lot more — can easily be envisioned to take the place of the UN. As it exists, the UN is an organisation that generates hopes and promises but delivers only discussions and digressions, and belated chastisements, none of which the world’s war-weary need or should be forced to tolerate. Paul LePage vetoed four bills on Tuesday afternoon, including one designed to strengthen child abuse prevention programs on the very day LePage proclaimed April to be Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. LePage wrote in a veto letter delivered to the Legislature Tuesday afternoon that LD 1685, A Resolve to Strengthen the Protection of Children from Abuse and Neglect, would create a study group to perform a task the Department of Health and Human Services is already capable of doing. The bill, which passed unanimously in the Legislature, called for the completion of a report by November of this year that outlines ways to strengthen the protection of children from abuse and neglect. Rep. Dick Farnsworth, D-Portland, who sponsored the bill, said he hopes DHHS can be as quick and efficient as the working group would have been. “This could have been a great opportunity to show how we, the legislative and executive branches, are working together to achieve a common goal of increased vigilance around issues of abuse and neglect,” said Farnsworth in a prepared statement. “The committee will be watching the department to ensure we are working toward the same ends. LePage did not lay out a timeline for DHHS to perform the work in his veto letter. “I am in favor of efforts to make Maine children safe from abuse and neglect,” wrote LePage. “However, it makes no sense for the Legislature to demand work from the Department of Health and Human Services through a resolve when the department has volunteered to conduct the work in a reasonable timeframe. … Not every solution needs to be a legislative enactment. LePage also vetoed LD 1597, An Act to Clarify Provisions in the Medical Marijuana Act, which would allow elected officials to visit medical marijuana grow sites for the purpose of being educated about cultivation, but only by invitation. In current law, only medical marijuana caregivers, emergency services personnel or repair workers can access the facilities and only under the primary caregiver’s supervision. LD 1597 passed unanimously through the Legislature earlier this month. “It seems hypocritical for us as elected officials to exempt ourselves from the law, especially when most of those elected would not need specialized knowledge of medical marijuana to perform their job duties,” wrote LePage in his veto letter. Rep. Drew Gattine, D-Westbrook, who sponsored the bill, said it would have provided valuable opportunities for elected officials to learn about the medical marijuana industry. “The governor’s veto essentially strips elected state and local officials of the ability to see for themselves the facilities that they’re charged with overseeing,” said Gattine in a prepared statement. LePage called LD 1365, An Act to Promote New Models of Mobility and Access to Transportation, “unnecessary and unwieldy” in his veto letter. The bill, which passed unanimously in the Legislature, sought to replace the state’s Interagency Transportation Coordinating Committee with a new public transit advisory council — including government and elected officials — for the purpose of developing regional transit plans. Rep. Sharon Treat, D-Hallowell, who sponsored the bill, said its failure would put at risk the state’s efforts around economic development and measures to help elders stay in their homes for as long as possible. “This is about planning for the future,” said Treat in a written statement. “Rather than just looking inward to state government as the governor would have us do, this measure brings all kinds of Mainers to the table to plan for next-generation transit. LePage also vetoed a bill, LD 1717, A Resolve to Support Homeless Youth Shelters, because he said funding for the shelters is adequate and that they are currently operating at less than full capacity. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Margaret Craven, D-Lewiston, sought to alter the funding formula for the shelters based on regional allocations from two years ago and redirect unspent funds from a contract with the now-closed Halcyon House emergency shelter in Skowhegan to New Beginnings emergency shelter in Lewiston. “Just because a shelter closes, we cannot close our eyes and ignore the ongoing need that exists for Maine youth,” said Craven in a written statement. “With homelessness the highest it’s been in years, we should be looking to give these kids a chance at getting back on their feet. LePage wrote in his veto letter that enactment of the bill could lead to funding shortages in some areas of the state. “This resolve requires the department to allocate funding in a way that prevents it from responding to changing needs. … The money should be spent where the need is greatest,” wrote LePage. The bills now move back to the House and Senate, where two-thirds majority votes are necessary to override LePage’s vetoes. 1.5. LePage vetoes three Democratic bills1.10.
