The floods in the UK in February were a catastrophe for everyone affected. It was portrayed dramatically by the 24/7 news coverage which highlighted the suffering, the inadequacies of flood defences and initially the lack of response from emergency services and government. In the later stages, insurers had to take a share of the blame for delays even though the processes of dealing with the water damage, drying out, assessment of the loss and repairs take months if they are to be done properly. Arguments rage as to the causes and solutions – to dredge or not to dredge, the cost-benefit analysis of implementing flood defence work, the overall spend on flood prevention, whether to protect land or property and, of course, insurers’ willingness to insure property that is repeatedly flooded. Quite rightly, the only sensible approach is to hold a properly considered post-mortem after the initial emergency is over. We are told that January and February were the wettest months on record and we experienced once-in-250-year weather. The media coverage gave the impression of a tragedy of huge proportions yet the figures do not suggest this. Just over 6,000 houses were flooded, which is about 10% of the number in 2007. If the figures are correct the insurance loss is about ?300m and allowing for commercial losses and business interruption the industry loss could be about ?500m – well below the estimated ?2-3bn of the 2007 floods. This figure seemed to be substantiated by Aviva declaring flood losses of about ?60m. The numbers may turn out to be low but it does look as though flood prevention schemes and the action of authorities have had a major favourable impact. Towns that are habitually flooded along the Severn seem to have escaped the worst because of recent work and flooding along the Thames was not as disastrous as it could have been. The loss, while large, has not been significant enough to impact the share prices of insurers and it seems that providing the rest of 2014 produces no other major weather event, it is containable. The Association of British Insurance companies receive just under ?7bn of household insurance premium each year and the loss is under 5% of this. Over the last 10 years about ?60bn has been paid in household premiums and ?35bn paid out in claims. An underwriting profit was made in seven of the years. Even taking into account the major floods of 2007 and storms of 2010, an underwriting profit of about ?750m was made over the period. The profit made in non-flood years makes this class attractive for insurers. The glaring issue is insurers’ costs. This accounts for a massive 40% of premiums paid – ?2.8bn in 2012 and ?24bn over the 10-year period, the lion’s share being commission. A great deal of the figure comes from high levels of commission paid to banks and building societies and some large brokers. This needs to be looked at. From 2015, the Statement of Principles will be superseded by Flood Re, spreading the burden of flood insurance more equitably around the market. It will be funded by a levy/tax on all policyholders and an affordable premium on properties in high-risk flood areas. This will range from ?220 for a band A property to over ?500 for a band G one, now possibly with a higher figure for a band H home. Business properties, buy to let and properties built after 2009 are excluded. 1 It is hoped that the availability of affordable flood insurance will not ease the pressure on government to spend adequately on flood prevention. This is crucial. There is also no mention of incentivising homeowners to carry out their own flood prevention work or penalising those who do not. 2 Commission may be an issue. Presumably premiums paid to Flood Re are net and have to be grossed up. It will be interesting how insurers and those receiving high commission deal with this. Will policyholders have to pay much more according to the intermediary they choose? Or will insurers have to produce a system where no commission is payable. This would be an administrative nightmare. 3 There are a number of exclusions. I agree that commercial premises and buy to let properties should be excluded. It is not equitable that businesses are subsidised by those located in non-flood risk areas. However, the anomalies need to be considered. Tenants should be able to obtain contents cover. Houses with partial business use should be considered. No doubt these issues will be sensibly resolved. 4 Full consideration needs to be given to the dividing line between what is a flood and what is a storm. This can already be difficult with damage caused by surface water, overflowing drains, flash floods and so forth. Presumably the claims bible being produced will cover this. 5 When the flood risk for high-risk properties is taken over by Flood Re, the remaining risks are comparatively low and predictable. Household insurance will become an extremely profitable class and competition for business will intensify especially from direct writers where commission is not payable. This will be good news for policyholders but bad news for those that earn very high commissions. Flood Re will take losses up to ?250m and reinsure up to a one-in-200-year loss estimated to be ?2.4bn. We had our one-in-250-year loss in February, so it should prove to be highly profitable for reinsurers and Flood Re. We were nearing decision week and we mothers were huddled in the indoor playground, frantically discussing — what else — our preschool attempts. “It’s a Dalton-feeder.”“Nice,” another nodded over the mini-trampoline. “It’s all about exmissions.” Several mothers sighed anxiously.I may have four degrees, but I’d never heard the word “exmissions” before this preschool palaver. The opposite of “admissions,” “exmissions” is the process of getting students out of the school. Many parents were madly concerned about which kindergartens the preschools could get them into. (Message boards exist where parents analyze the preschools’ “TT” — top tier — hit rate.)“I’m on a one-year wait-list for pre-preschool classes,” a mother of a 5-month-old said. She was ultimately ogling the eminent 92nd Street Y. While I’d gone local, other parents had applied around the city, ready to move near the best nursery they nabbed. “Don’t forget to send top-choice letters,” another kindly suggested.I lowered my gaze. I simply did not have the clear determination that these parents had for their kids. I’d always had trouble envisioning the future, even for myself. I didn’t have concrete goals for Zee. I couldn’t see what her ‘success’ looked like. I was ashamed: I did not have a “top.” “Gotta get them on the track,” a mom said.“The track to what?” I wanted to ask, but was afraid to voice aloud, along with the real question that kept nudging me: I wanted Zee to get a spot in this crowded city, to give her opportunities and confidence, but what was the endgame to all this meshugas?Zee honked a fake horn in the fake taxi. Perhaps it was hard for me to have clear goals because I’d attended the kind of university that many saw as an “endgame” without having gone to any fancy schools — and I had ambivalent feelings about it. True, I’d had rigorous academic training, opportunities to travel and exposure to illustrious thinkers. My closest friendships were made there. But it was also a fiercely competitive environment. Some A students, like me, had been awkward kids, escaping tumultuous family lives, seeking order, attention and praise, and were insecure. Social scenarios could be fraught.Many of our identities — gawky and robust alike — had been based on being the best in the class. Suddenly, half of us were below average. We didn’t know who we were. I was the kind of teenage math nerd Malcolm Gladwell describes in “David and Goliath,” who, petrified by her genius peers, dropped out of science. After college I’d needed a decade to recover. I’d fled to Europe, tried out a dozen jobs. I’d felt overloaded with choice, plagued with potential, but I had little direction and high expectations of myself. For years, everything I did felt substandard, never equaling my peers. College wasn’t an end. The Ivy kept growing, for better and worse.If Zee eventually wanted this, I would certainly support her. But it wasn’t my goal. Besides, if it was, wouldn’t she just rebel?!I watched Zee clumsily trot across the room. “I did chasse, Mama, like you show me.” I chuckled. I supposed I, too, had dreams for my child, fantasies that she would pursue my unfulfilled ambitions, create beauty in a way I never could and become a fashion designer or a dancer. But no preschools I visited offered junior couture, and truthfully, these imaginings emerged from my desire for her to enjoy the things I enjoyed, rather than an actual plan for her future. It was hard for me to link wooden blocks with a career in aesthetics. Then, as I daydreamed about my daughter’s 2035 stylish, flowing pret-a-porter line, she bashed into the gym’s wall. “Are you O.K.?” Maybe she would be an M&A lawyer or a rabbi or a surfer. I didn’t know what I really wanted for her, or if I should want anything at all. She was 2! Jon and I hadn’t applied to preschools that continued to elementary because we didn’t know who she would be at 4, let alone 17. Or 40.“I’m fine.” Zee gleefully chased a boy around a mat, swaying her hips to the background music. What I did know was that I wanted her to pursue goals because she was internally motivated, not because she was running away or sought validation. Success, my gut told me as Zee tackled him to the ground, was having the self-awareness and confidence to pursue your real interests, and the courage to attempt love. “Zee, gentle, please,” I called, as she rammed her head into his side. I didn’t have a 20-year plan. I couldn’t parent for the long term. I could only make decisions that made sense now. “Snack time.”Hopefully, I’d remember this bit of Zen when the letters arrived. Still, stocks posted solid gains on Monday, helped by comments from Fed Chair Janet Yellen. She reassured investors, saying the Fed's bond-buying stimulus program is still needed, and would continue. The Dow Jones industrial average ( ^DJI ) rallied 134 points, the Standard & Poor's 500 index ( ^GPSC ) gained 14 and the Nasdaq composite ( ^IXIC ) rose 43 points. For the quarter, the Dow edged slightly lower, while the S&P and Nasdaq inched higher. Microsoft ( MSFT ) led today's advance, gaining nearly 2 percent. A severely malnourished 5-year-old Spring boy whose father and stepmother were arrested this weekend on felony charges was not emaciated when he was visited, interviewed and photographed by child welfare workers earlier this year, officials said. When social workers sought to further investigate abuse and neglect allegations, the parents retained an attorney and refused to cooperate further, Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin said Monday. "And then we were told that the father and the boy had moved out of state," she said, adding that officials were never given a location. That's why the discovery of the skinny-to-the-bones boy five weeks later has shocked not only the neighbors and the larger Houston community – but social workers. CPS officials saw the child on Feb. 20. "He was not in this state of malnourishment," Olguin said, citing pictures taken at that time. "Now we know they never moved. ... We still had more investigating to do on that case. Bradley Bleimeyer, 24, and 33-year-old Tami Bleimeyer, are charged with child endangerment. A criminal complaint accuses them of conduct that placed the child "in imminent danger of physical impairment, namely, by failing to provide food. Photographs provided by authorities show an extremely thin child with reddish blond hair with what appear to be abrasions and bruises on his back. He is wearing a soiled diaper. Law enforcement intervened on Thursday while responding to a disturbance call at a home in the 21500 block of Castlemont Lane. When deputies arrived, they saw a 16-year-old boy and a man later identified as Bradley Bleimeyer fighting in the front yard, according to Assistant Chief Deputy Mark Herman with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office. Officers were told that the 5-year-old boy was being forced to live in a closet under a stairway inside the house. They also were informed that the younger child's stepmother, later identified as Tami Bleimeyer, had left the home with the boy before deputies arrived. Believing the youngster to be in danger, deputies searched for the stepmother. They tracked her down at a motel in Humble on Friday when they spotted Bradley Bleimeyer leaving one of the rooms. When they went inside, deputies found Tami Bleimeyer and the boy, Herman said. The child "was in bad shape, bleeding from his back," Herman said, and was taken to a Houston hospital. The parents were arrested early Saturday morning. At some point, law enforcement officials released three other children to relatives, the assistant chief confirmed. Olguin said that Tami Bleimeyer has six children - the 16-year-old boy that had been fighting with Bradley Bleimeyer as well as youngsters ages 14, 13, 7, another 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl. The fate of those children will be addressed in court on Tuesday when CPS officials request custody of the hospitalized boy. A preliminary report from a doctor could lead to more serious charges, potentially felony injury to a child, Herman said. "Someone caused these injuries to him. That's what the doctors feel," he said. Herman added that deputies are familiar with the address because of previous disturbance calls "but nothing that led us into the house. CPS also has history with Tami Bleimeyer, who had been investigated "before she and Bradley got together," Olguin said. "We'll let the court know we need to see the other children and assess whether they're safe - not only to see if they are victims but to see what they can tell us about what was happening in the home. Tami Bleimeyer was released on $2,000 bail on Sunday. She is believed to be trying to retrieve her children, Olguin said. Bradley Bleimeyer remains in the Harris County jail. Saturday's arrest was his third in Harris County in as many months, court records show. In mid-January, he was charged with misdemeanor theft of a battery. In early February, he was charged with burglary of a habitation, a felony, for allegedly kicking down the door of a house two blocks down. He encountered the homeowner's son - a friend of one of his children - who pointed a handgun at Bleimeyer and caused him to flee, court records state. He was released on $20,000 bail in that incident. His partner appears to have taken his name as his common-law wife. Tami Elizabeth Frank purchased the 2,300-square-foot, two-story house on Castlemont in September 2009 for $98,000. The two-toned brown structure is in far north Harris County's Bridgestone subdivision. Neighbors reported incidents of yelling, loud music and loose dogs attributed to the household over the years - and never saw more than two or three children. On Monday, the unkempt front yard was littered with trash including several empty pouches of chewing tobacco. An overgrown back yard with vegetation that impeded access to play equipment could be seen through slats in the fence. The house is one block away from Klein Independent School District's Roth Elementary. Parked end to end with a white SUV, the bed of a pickup in the driveway hung over the sidewalk - frustrating crossing guards as they directed and supervised children walking from school late Monday. Christy Moszkowicz, the mother of two sons, couldn't believe there had been a starving child across the street. "I saw the pictures on the computer. I couldn't even look at them. I started crying. You could see his little ribs," she said. The recovering boy's biological mother, who told CPS investigators that "she had not been allowed contact," is now at the hospital with him, Olguin said. The child turned 5 in February. He has a long road ahead physically and psychologically that can't be fixed simply by feasting. He will have to be reintroduced to food slowly to avoid going into shock or even cardiac arrest, Olguin said. And, there has been an outpouring of support for the child. "We've gotten so many calls from all over from people who want to help this boy," she added. A message left late Monday for the parents' family lawyer, who was identified by Olguin as Julie Ketterman, was not returned immediately. Brendan Eich's 2008 donation to an anti-gay-marriage cause now dogs his new CEO job. In his first interview about it, he resists calls to resign or recant, but argues inclusiveness makes Mozilla's world-spanning community possible. Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich Stephen Shankland/CNET Brendan Eich knew there would be challenges taking over as Mozilla chief executive -- competing with Chrome, rebuilding the Web as a foundation for apps, finding a mobile foothold for Firefox OS. What he didn't expect was that a political issue would push aside those technology concerns. Eich's donation of $1,000 to the Proposition 8 effort to ban gay marriage in California, made in 2008 and uncovered through public records in 2012, became a rallying point for a large and vocal group that has fought for years for those marriage rights. More than 70,000 people have signed a petition asking for Eich to resign if he can't unequivocally say he supports marriage equality. Now, in his first interview on the subject, Eich is responding with a message that Mozilla is at its core inclusive -- not just of gay-marriage supporters but also of people like him or gay-marriage opponents in Indonesia who also are part of the Mozilla cause. Those beliefs must be checked at the door on the way into Mozilla, he argues. "If Mozilla cannot continue to operate according to its principles of inclusiveness, where you can work on the mission no matter what your background or other beliefs, I think we'll probably fail," he told CNET. Mozilla is accustomed to leveraging the Firefox browser to pursue its philosophical fight to keep Internet technology open and under the control of its users. In a reversal, Firefox has become a point of leverage in a very different fight for gay-marriage rights. Hampton Catlin -- CEO of app developer Rarebit, the company he and his husband, Michael Lintorn Catlin, co-founded -- publicly announced Rarebit is boycotting Firefox OS. Dating site OKCupid told Firefox users to switch to a different browser. Blog posts about inclusiveness at Mozilla from Eich, Mozilla Chairwoman Mitchell Baker, and Mozilla itself didn't quell the controversy. Though Eich refuses to discuss his own beliefs explicitly or say whether they've changed, he disagreed with the assertion that being opposed to gay-marriage rights is equivalent to being sexist or racist, and he said political and religious speech is still protected. Eich is the inventor of JavaScript, the co-founder of Mozilla, and before his CEO appointment last week was the nonprofit organization's chief technology officer. He talked Tuesday with CNET's Stephen Shankland, and the following is a transcript of the interview. Eich: It's not what I expected. I had lots of other things to work on. I'm doing two jobs, which is challenging, but I expect it'll get better. You made the donation in 2008, and it came out in 2012. Eich: I wasn't sure. There were a lot of other considerations getting me to be CEO. I think I'm a good fit for it. I'm doing a great job at it. It's important to look beyond the particulars. Mozilla has always worked according to principles of inclusiveness. It may be challenging for a CEO, but everyone in our community can have different beliefs about all sorts of things that may be in conflict. They leave them at the door when they come to work on the Mozilla mission. We are a broad, big, mission-based organization. It's not to say some of those other beliefs aren't as contributing to the open Web, but we will not succeed globally without being maximally inclusive by leaving exclusionary beliefs at the door. I've done that for 16 years. I've done open source for 20 years. I think my reputation is well-known. Mozilla.org was founded 16 years ago today. The open source went up on March 31. I've always treated people as they come, I've worked with them, tried to get them into the project, I've been as fair and inclusive as anyone -- I think more. I intend to be even more so as CEO because I agree there's an obligation to reach out to people who for whatever reason are marginalized. Eich: Two things. One is -- without getting into my personal beliefs, which I separate from my Mozilla work -- when people learned of the donation, they felt pain. I saw that in friends' eyes, [friends] who are LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transsexual]. I saw that in 2012. I am sorry for causing that pain. The other thing is imagine a world without Firefox. Mozilla is under a threat here. We don't know how big. If Mozilla cannot continue to operate according to its principles of inclusiveness, where you can work on the mission no matter what your background or other beliefs, I think we'll probably fail. A world without Firefox and without Firefox OS and without our approach to putting the user at the center of cloud services instead of having users get pulled into walled gardens -- I think that would be a pretty dark world. I would encourage people to think about that, even if they have a hard time understanding me or meeting me at the Mozilla mission and working on the common cause. If Mozilla became more exclusive and required more litmus tests, I think that would be a mistake. That's a fair point, but it's pretty clear that people have latched onto this issue as a way to express their own political beliefs. There was the OKCupid advice not to use Firefox, the developers boycotting, and the general calls for your resignation. Eich: I am CEO, and I'm confident I am the best person for the job right now. I serve at the board's pleasure. If that should change, I'll do something else. I don't think it's good for my integrity or Mozilla's integrity to be pressured into changing a position. If Mozilla became more exclusive and required more litmus tests, I think that would be a mistake that would lead to a much smaller Mozilla, a much more fragmented Mozilla. We have a strong Indonesian community. We're developing Firefox OS to go into market there. I have people there on the other side of this particular issue. They don't bring it into Mozilla when they work in the Mozilla community. I met a lot of them at Mozcamp 2012 in Singapore. They don't have quite the megaphone in that part of the world. But the Mozilla mission and our inclusiveness principles really must matter to include them too. The Mozilla blog mentioned specific actions you were going to take in the direction of inclusiveness. Eich: There are actions, but I don't want to talk about those without preempting some plans that I'm not going to speak about. I did say something on my blog that I'm serious about. The first thing that's coming up is to meet with somebody on staff, a supporter of me and in the LGBT community who's working on a new project to bring in new people from that community in less than ideal circumstances where they can't afford to hack on Mozilla, or they need child care, outreach, support, transportation maybe -- and to start to become contributors to Mozilla. I'm personally supporting that. I want to be held accountable for that work. It is important. It's not the only thing I'm doing. I'm listening and learning from becoming a CEO sponsor. We do need to do even more to deal with the fact we have a lot of contributors who have privilege, and that's great, but we have to find those who have less privilege and help them contribute. We need all the people around the world with talent helping, otherwise we won't achieve our mission. Mozilla really is different. We're not a giant, well-funded company. It really is people power that helps us achieve our goals. That project is called Project Ascend. Eich: For Mozilla, it's problematic because of our principles of inclusiveness, because the Indonesian community supports me but doesn't have quite the megaphone. We have to be careful to put the principles of inclusiveness first. I can see how other companies might have different reasons for existence and might take a different approach. I'm not going to say all companies have to have the same principles, but for Mozilla, that's always been how we've operated. It's how I've always operated in open communities, in open source, and at Mozilla. I'm fighting shoulder to shoulder, whether you're gay or straight, whether you're married or single, whether you're conservative or liberal, young or old. I've read plenty of opinions that say you're entitled to your own opinions and political beliefs. But there are other folks who say your stance is the equivalent of overt racism or sexism. That's a firing offense and gets politicians thrown out of office. Eich: I don't believe that's true, on the basis of what's permissible to support or vote on in 2008. It's still permissible. Beliefs that are protected, that include political and religious speech, are generally not something that can be held against even a CEO. I understand there are people who disagree with me on this one. Eich: That's a good question, because the CEO does have some aspect of being the one person who exemplifies the company. I still think it's pretty important to judge people by how they treat others, in my case for over 16 years, and allow them to separate some of their deeply held beliefs which do not come into play in their role at an organization like Mozilla -- even the CEO role. If we don't do that, the principles of inclusiveness that we've practiced will be hurt. I know there are people who disagree on many things, but I'm fighting shoulder to shoulder whether you're gay or straight, whether you're married or single, whether you're conservative or liberal, young or old, wherever you are in the world. I'm trying to overcome barriers that marginalize people. That's super critical to our success, and it's something I can do even better as CEO, both inside the company and out. I would be asked to be judged, like I would judge other company executives, by my conduct and how I comport myself in my role. Eich: I hadn't thought about that. It seems that's a dead issue. I don't want to answer hypotheticals. Separating personal beliefs here is the real key here. The threat we're facing isn't to me or my reputation, it's to Mozilla. Eich: I prefer not to talk about my beliefs. One of the things about my principles of inclusiveness is not just that you leave it at the door, but that you don't require others to put targets on themselves by labeling their beliefs, because that will present problems and will be seen as divisive. Eich: It's hard to speculate. I do take it seriously. We are trying to not only put forth principles of inclusiveness but also talk about what's going on with Mozilla and why we matter. Some people will hear the prospect of a world without Firefox and get it right away. Others may think mission accomplished with Firefox, done, OK. But Firefox OS, cloud services, user sovereignty and agency in the cloud -- those are underserved, and that's squarely and in our mission. It's right in front of us, because when you do a mobile OS, you do services, and when you do services, some of them are identity-attached services. Mozilla is the anti-walled garden. We want the user to be able to mix and match services, to take their data in and out, to own their data so they don't have to put it into some other walled garden where they don't get as good a deal. What exactly happened with the board? You had 60 percent of your board step down [three out of five]. You got one new board member, so you're back up to three. Eich: It was two weeks ago, before the CEO appointment. Three board members ended their terms for a variety of reasons. Two were planning to leave for some time. Ellen Siminoff [CEO of online education company Schmoop] was planning to leave since late last year, another one was going to leave at the end of the CEO search. And John Lilly left for a variety of reasons. John was CEO and was busy with venture capital relationships Greylock [Partners]. John had done a ton of work for Mozilla at some cost to his partnership. Beliefs that are protected, that include political and religious speech, are generally not something that can be held against even a CEO. Eich: Not so far as I know. I'm not on the board, but that's not credible to me. Eich: We're going full speed ahead to get into with mobile market, both with the new higher-end phones with Firefox OS and the new $25 phone where we expect to get a lot of volume -- not only competing against smartphones where the old Android 2.3 is basically all but dead, but also converting people with feature phones to their first Web-enabled smartphones. That is going to happen very soon, because those channels are flowing. The sooner we can get in there, the better. That's been something I've worked on, and something I think will get us onto the mobile OS pie chart. That will help with all sorts of things. Once we do that, we go up the device capability scale and scale around the world. Supposing you get a significant number of Firefox OS users, it seems to me there's an even worse version of the Android problem: Although there are a lot of Android devices in absolute terms, the activity of the users is much lower on average than with iOS. They download fewer apps, pay for less stuff, browse the Web less. I suspect people with $25 Firefox OS phones, potentially on very limited data plans or using their phones basically as a smartphone, their activity levels could be even lower than Android's on average. Eich: You're right that with different segments of market you get different app usage. A first-time smartphone user coming off a feature phone might not even know what apps are apart from the few that were on the feature phone. Games are an important category. Most people do look for games. Even for Gingerbread phones there are non-Google Play marketplaces. They aren't that good in my opinion. We can easily deal with that and have great games. Getting down to a smaller screen and less memory is challenging, but the games also tend to be simpler. There are other things like communications apps that are obviously pretty important. Even though people have data plans that are pre-paid, they do use operator billing [in which app purchasing and app service fees are attached to the phone bill]. It's the easiest way to pay. There are no credit cards in a lot of the emerging markets. We think there is a way to monetize for app developers. We also look at not just the global sites, but also the local tail [very geographically specific apps] that can be very specific and can be very Mozillian. We get people developing apps because they're excited about Firefox OS. Eich: We didn't hear about it until it was up. We're talking now, because it may be they'll take it down. They didn't seem to be aware of the statement that Mitchell Baker made over the weekend. As an organization, Mitchell said, Mozilla supports LGBT equality. I don't think they heard about that. There's a good chance that'll come down. I can't promise you. We're talking to them now. The other was developers Rarebit, two husbands [married to each other] who take your actions very personally and withdrew their app from the Firefox marketplace. Eich: I met with one of them. It was actually a good meeting. I'm not not going to speak for him. What started a week and a day ago has changed. It's not for him the same as it was. For everyone involved in this a week ago, if they start to see things go big in a way that could mean the end of Mozilla, the loss of the principles of inclusiveness, a world without Firefox, they have concerns that transcend the concern about me. I had a good meeting over this weekend. Eich: I don't know. If it is, the vision of Mozilla will be lost. I don't think anyone else will carry the user-first agenda above all other considerations. I understand big commercial corporations can't do it. They have to ultimately answer to their shareholders. They can have founders with large shares and that can say they're willing to take a hit in order to be long-term thinkers, and I admire that, but in no way can they do what Mozilla does. We bled for the user. We did Firefox when nobody thought the browser was a competitive market or ever would be again. We did Firefox OS when people said there was no need for a mobile OS but there was obviously a gap below the market. And we're doing a user-centric approach to services that involve identity and choice and control of data. Mozilla has to uphold its principles, has to have integrity to advance its mission. I feel strongly about what's happened, and I feel I'm still the best CEO for the job. I've got lots to contribute and I'll help us turn some corners. The corners that need me as CEO, not just founder or CTO, are a big mobile turn that involves services [and] user identity and agency in the cloud. If we get our message out about inclusiveness and how Mozilla cannot succeed without being truly globally inclusive, then we'll have trouble. I expect I'll be helpful there, too, in the long run. We're in a struggle now, but if we get through it, we'll be stronger for it. That's been true of all our struggles at Mozilla. When we pull everybody together for common mission, that's when we really succeed. Updated today at 6:48 PM SCOTTSDALE -- Music, art and P.E. may be on the chopping block at Scottsdale elementary schools. The district is facing a nearly $4 million budget shortfall. So those classes, known as "specials," would be the first thing to go. Under the new proposal, students would attend art, music and P.E. every other day instead of daily at elementary schools. "I think every other day will be good," said dad Sonny Fisher. But not everyone agrees with Fisher. "I think they're necessary," said mom Veronica Hawkins. Hawkins said she hopes that part of the proposal doesn't go through. "They need to figure out a way to make it work,” said Hawkins. Hawkins said she wouldn't mind seeing cuts from administrative staff. "Some of them, some people aren't paid enough, and some people are paid too much," said Hawkins. According to the proposal, there will be some cuts there a reduction in administrative staff and support, saving about $700k. But the plan also calls for a reduction in art, music and PE teachers. According to the proposal, cutting the classes and eliminating 30 teachers would save $1.5 million. "I think it's a shame. I think Arizona is going downhill really fast," said Theresa Steeger, a former teacher. "They need to do something other than common core for four hours every day. If the kids would go outside for an hour and do arts, that would be awesome if they could do that every day. You can follow this link to see the latest budget update. “Scottsdale Unified School District, like other school districts across Arizona, has been affected by both reductions in funding from the state legislature and the loss of the maintenance and operations override, which supports programs in our schools. Last year, we reduced more than $1 million in administrative costs from our budget to minimize the impact to our classrooms. However, with no way to balance the loss of funds, SUSD increased class size by two students. Recently, SUSD Leadership has given the Governing Board a proposal on budget reductions for the 2014-2015 school year. At the upcoming meeting on Tuesday, April 8th, the Governing Board will receive a budget update from Chief Financial Officer, Daniel O’Brien; however, no action will be taken. Keep in mind, the SUSD budget won’t be approved and finalized until the Governing Board meeting in June. SUSD, as well as other school districts across the State, is still waiting for the Governor and the State Legislators to approve the State Budget for educational funding. A balanced budget has been placed before the Governing Board as for information, which includes a variety of cost-saving measures and reductions. Because we do not recommend any increases in class size, the proposed reductions do include reduction of elementary specials (art, PE, music) by one half. Other reductions include an additional $700,000 in administrative and administrative support positions, staffing efficiencies, savings from using phased retirement for employees and minimizing insurance costs. Senator Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada INQUIRER.net FILE PHOTOMANILA, Philippines — Senator Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada said his lawyers will file on Monday (April 7) a motion for reconsideration on the Ombudsman’s ruling to charge him and other personalities in court with plunder and graft in connection with the pork barrel funds scam. “Maghahain na po kami sa darating na Lunes sapagkat natanggap na po ng aking abogado ‘yung joint resolution na nanggaling po sa Ombudsman,” Estrada said in a television interview on Wednesday. (We will file [a motion for reconsideration] on Monday because my lawyer already received the joint resolution from the Ombudsman. “Pero syempre ini-expect ko na ibabasura nila ‘yun. But syempre we will exhaust all legal remedies,” he said. (But of course I’m expecting that they will reject it. But of course, we will exhaust all legal remedies. Estrada, who is in Los Angeles, promised to return to the country to face the charges against him. He said he was scheduled to return home after Holy Week. The senator also expressed readiness to return to jail if the court will issue a warrant of arrest against him. “E nakulong na ako dati, sanay na akong makulong (I was jailed before, I’m already used to it),” he said, referring to the plunder case that was filed before against him and his father, former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada. “Noong ikunulong nila ako dati, dalawang taon nila akong ikinulong pagkatapos just to be acquitted of all the charges against me dahil wala naman silang nakitang ako’y may kinuhang kahit na isang kusing sa kaban ng ating bayan. (When they sent me to jail before, they imprisoned me for two years just to be acquitted of all the charges against me because they did not prove that I stole a single cent from the public’s coffers. “E talagang haharapin ko ito dahil I can tell you straight, gusto ko sabihin sa taumbayan, sa aking mga kababayang Pilipino, wala po akong kasalanan, wala po akong ninakaw kahit isang kusing sa ating kaban ng bayan,” the senator added. Aside from Senator Estrada, the Ombudsman also found enough basis to charge Senators Juan Ponce-Enrile and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles and several others with plunder and graft in connection with the alleged illegal disbursements of the Priority Development Assistance Fund also known as “pork barrel” funds.
