With the benefit of a couple of days to ponder his team’s second-round playoff exit to the Island Storm, Halifax Rainmen president and CEO Andre Levingston doesn’t have to think very long when asked if he would have done anything differently during one of the franchise’s most tumultuous seasons. “Yeah, brought Coach (Craig) Hodges in from the beginning of the year,” he said. “We were one of the best teams at the end of the year, you just wonder what we could have been like had we had everybody in place and coaches in place during training camp. The year’s low points have been well documented. Following an 0-6 start, Levingston fired head coach Chris Terrell in December and parachuted in Hodges, a four-time NBA champion as a player and assistant coach, to salvage the season. Later that month the team released 27-year-old guard Tyler Richards after he was arrested on drug trafficking and weapons-related charges. Then came negative attention garnered by Hodges’ attempt to join former Chicago Bulls teammate Dennis Rodman and other ex-NBA veterans on a basketball trip to North Korea. He made it as far as Beijing before paperwork issues forced him to return to Halifax. The Rainmen then stumbled to an 11-29 season, and weren’t expected to make much noise in the all-inclusive NBL Canada playoffs. But they pulled a surprising 3-1 upset of the Saint John Mill Rats and took the Storm to six games before ultimately succumbing 110-105 on Saturday night at the Metro Centre. “I’m really not surprised at all of the way we beat Saint John, because our team was peaking at the right time,” Levingston said. “However with P.E.I., they were a different kind of club. They had as much depth as we did, and their athleticism and their length on their team was similar to ours, so they were a little bit harder to deal with than Saint John was. Criticism was also levied toward Levingston for his failure to fulfil a promise to end massive turnover in the team’s roster, a fact of life in minor professional basketball. “It’s hard to just stick with a set roster at this level because you’re never sure if you can bring everybody back because players might get opportunities in other places in the world, so that’s a hard thing,” he said. “It’s one of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Team brass conducted exit interviews on Monday, and Levingston said they have identified a core group of players they hope to bring back next season. That includes star Jason Williams, who was brought in when the team was 0-6 and in many games during the playoffs was the best player on the court. Levingston identified him as a “priority” to re-sign. “I know he’s getting interest right now from other parts of the world, but he’s expressed interest in wanting to come back should there not be another opportunity somewhere else so significant that he can’t turn down,” he said. Bringing Hodges back is also high on his off-season to-do list. “I know Coach had a great time here in Halifax and would like to come back,“ he said. “So it’s just a matter of putting pen to paper and coming up with a (deal) that we both agree to and I think we can do that. The team also struggled at the gate during the season, often attracting less than 1,000 fans to the Metro Centre. To that end, Levingston said he knows that he needs to improve things, and that includes adding more staff to find new revenue opportunities, as well as trying to get more local corporate support. “You’re never satisfied with the gate. You want a sold-out arena, so no, we can never be satisfied. We definitely we need to get better at some things,” he said. One strategy to build fan loyalty is to bring back players like Williams that “that the fans have come to grow and love”. “I think in essence the gate kind of takes care of itself because people have excitement about a returning roster. Overall, however, Levingston, ever the optimist, said there are many positives to take away from this season. “This is probably one of the years that I had the most fun, because we brought in a group of guys that fought until the end,” he said. “We brought in a coaching staff that was committed to developing these players and it shows what a team can do when we have good chemistry and get a group of guys who buy into a coaching strategy.
